Even under high magnification, the microfossils still retain their original ultrastructure including growth bands, again indicating the absence of any diagenetic alteration. The 2008 coring and site survey cruise thus confirmed the potential of these older basin sediments, extending back to well over 1 million years, to provide a similar high-resolution paleoclimate record as was recovered from ODP-893.
