Education and Outreach

Through Education and Outreach, MSI provides an ocean view of the world to over 20,000 students of all ages annually. From preK-12 to post-secondary institutions, from educators to community groups and the public, MSI Education and Outreach takes advantage of the rich resources of MSI and UCSB, and is uniquely positioned to link marine research and education. UCSB is home to leading marine scientists conducting cutting edge research from the coral reefs of Polynesia, to the kelp forests of the Pacific and to Antarctica. Our Education and Outreach efforts tap into this expertise to provide pioneering education programs based on the latest marine science research and conservation efforts.

The Research Experience & Education Facility, better known as the REEF, is our primary education destination. The REEF, located just down the road from MSI, has over 200 different species of marine organisms from around the world for visitors to observe, interact with, and learn about. In addition, the REEF Mobile Unit brings our interactive aquariums directly into classrooms and public events throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.

Oceans-to-Classrooms (O2C) delivers an ocean view of the world to K-12 students and professional development opportunities to their teachers through visits to the classrooms and here at UCSB. Multi-faceted programs immerse participants in science lessons and activities designed to increase science literacy and enhance math and language arts skills. Developed around STEM-based, standards-focused content, O2C delivers innovative, place-based, hands-on learning with a global perspective.
