The UC Santa Barbara Marine Science Institute is proud to share that Dr. Deron Burkepile, Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology and Principal Investigator at the Marine Science Institute, has been elected a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America (ESA).

This prestigious recognition honors scientists who have made outstanding contributions to advancing ecological knowledge. As one of a select group of fellows named in 2026, Burkepile joins a distinguished community of researchers whose work has significantly shaped the field.

Burkepile’s research explores the fundamental dynamics of ecosystems, with a particular focus on how interactions among species influence ecological communities.

His work often examines the roles of predators, herbivores, and primary producers, as well as the consequences of losing key species due to human impacts such as overharvesting. By studying these relationships, his research helps inform strategies for conserving and restoring ecosystems.

A hallmark of his scholarship is its breadth across ecosystems. From coral reefs and kelp forests to terrestrial environments like savannas and grasslands, Burkepile’s work seeks general principles that govern how ecosystems function. His research also highlights the critical role animals play in nutrient cycling, demonstrating how they shape ecosystems both during their lives and after death.

Burkepile has expressed deep appreciation for the honor, noting that being recognized by ESA—one of the world’s leading ecological organizations—is especially meaningful given his identity as an ecologist.

The Marine Science Institute extends its warmest congratulations to Professor Burkepile on this well-deserved achievement and celebrates his continued leadership and impact in the field of ecology.
