The oceans and fisheries team at the Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab) has been collaborating with Global Fishing Watch over the past few years to tackle a diverse set of ocean challenges, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, overfishing, and human rights abuses aboard fishing vessels. Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is a new technology platform that uses satellite Automated Information Systems (AIS) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data to monitor fishing activity around the world in near real-time. Through this partnership, we have cultivated a deep understanding of the current data that GFW provides as well as the analytical methods to conduct novel analyses and inform the design and implementation of new fishing policies and regulations, management interventions, and conservation initiatives in nearshore waters and on the high seas. This project will support and broaden our collaboration with GFW by providing data science support to international projects using GFW data.
