The seaside location of UCSB greatly facilitates local research in the Santa Barbara Channel. The Marine Science Institute operates a fleet of small research vessels ideal for diving and coastal oceanographic research. The UCSB Marine Laboratory overseen by the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology also provides a fleet of small vessels, a facility for diving support services and a high capacity sea water system for use by students, faculty, and staff based at UCSB.
