Summer Gray
Summer Gray is Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research examines the social and cultural dynamics of coastal adaptation in a diverse range of contexts and engages with issues of environmental and climate justice. She draws on historical and ethnographic methods and has fieldwork experience in Guyana, the Netherlands, Venice, Japan, and the Maldives. Gray's book In the Shadow of the Seawall: Coastal Injustice and the Dilemma of Placekeeping (University of California Press, 2023) explores how frontline communities are negotiating with climate disruption after centuries of injustice on the shore. In addition to research, Gray also produces creative work with the The Carsey-Wolf Center’s Coastal Media Project.
