The BIOS-SCOPE program is an international, interdisciplinary research initiative in the northwestern Sargasso Sea near the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site, integrating oceanography, genomics, chemistry, ecology, and modeling to investigate the structure and function of microbial and zooplankton communities within the biogeochemical framework of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. Building on long-term time-series observations, the next phase will leverage the field, laboratory, and computational capacities of ASU’s Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences to couple metagenomics, proteomics, and experimental studies of plankton with detailed chemical analyses, advancing mechanistic understanding of organic matter production, transformation, and fate, and improving predictions of how expanding oligotrophic gyres respond to ocean change. The UCSB team will contribute integrated data management and synthesis, coordinate data submission to BCO-DMO and CMAP, support dissolved organic matter measurements, and participate in field campaigns, workshops, and collaborative research cruises at BATS.
