Marine archaea harbor previously uncharacterized enzymes that may enable the oxidation of petroleum-derived hydrocarbons under environmentally relevant conditions. This project investigates how these enzymes function, including their electron transfer partners and substrate preferences. The research will advance our understanding of microbial hydrocarbon cycling and inform future environmental and industrial biotechnologies.
