Abstract

UCSB will:

  1. Collaboratively undertake the project titled “Monitoring LPNF steelhead trout and other stream biota: the effects of wildfire, floods, and drought on stream ecosystems” as described in this document.
  2. Appoint Dr. H. Mark Page as Principal Investigator (PI).
  3. Hire and pay a post-doctoral candidate, research scientist, graduate student researcher (GSR), or another technical expert during each year and hire and pay field assistants each spring/summer. The post-doctoral candidate, research scientist, graduate student researcher (GSR), or another technical expert may supervise the field assistants and provide them with logistical support.
  4. Recruit and jointly supervise with the LPNF several volunteers to assist in executing the goals outlined in the agreement, including ancillary research/monitoring needs that advance the objectives of the partnership.
  5. Collaborate with the LPNF in the development of a work plan for carrying out project objectives.
  6. Assess and monitor stream populations and habitat conditions (based upon a suite of physicochemical and biological parameters) using eDNA, standard field measurements for aquatic communities, multimeters, and instream data loggers.
  7. Communicate with prospective project participants who will collaborate in the establishment of long-term monitoring programs focusing on stream habitats on the LPNF.
  8. Maintain frequent communication with the LPNF throughout this project to review progress and set timelines for the delivery of products. Facilitate project team conference calls as needed.
  9. Work with the LPNF to generate an annual progress report including Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Literature Cited sections. The report will include a map of recent fire burn perimeters and show all stream locations within these boundaries, and tables and figures placed in the back of the report, along with any appendices (e.g., photos, GIS mapping). Excel spreadsheets and ArcGIS Pro shape files will be included as separate documents.
  10. Fully acknowledge the LPNF in any published or formally presented material developed or derived from this participating agreement.
