Abstract

The primary goal of this project is to identify and remove lost spiny lobster traps from ecologically-sensitive areas in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary while collecting robust data on trap loss, bycatch, and fi shing effort to better inform management moving forward. Removal efforts will be undertaken alongside collaborators in the recreational dive industry and the National Park Service as well as local fi shermen, relying on both side scan sonar data as well as underwater SCUBA surveys. Identifi ed traps will be removed using hydraulic davits, and comprehensive data on trap location, condition, bycatch, destruct devices, etc. will be recorded.
