Abstract

We will create a forecasting tool for kelp restoration to enable timely decision-making and help prevent systems from tipping into undesirable states.

  1. Identify locations of hotspots (persistence) and coldspots (loss) of kelp forest under changing climate to determine regions and time frames that will no longer support functional kelp forests over the long-term.
  2. Identify environmental drivers of short-term (monthly, seasonal) abundance and gain/decline of kelp at each location in the state of CA and use them to forecast beneficial or adverse times to initiate kelp restoration or defense actions.
  3. Develop a streamlined workflow to regularly produce forecasts of upcoming conditions for kelp restoration and automatically post forecast maps to a website on a regular basis.
  4. Effective knowledge transfer of outcomes from the best available science on kelp restoration forecasting, to enable proactive and science-based restoration strategies for the entire state.
