Abstract

This Task Agreement supports the permitting, field work, data analysis, and publishing of technical reports for a collaborative research project between The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Dr. Jennifer Caselle, at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).  Dr. Caselle will direct Associate Specialist Peter Carlson (UCSB) on the data collection, analysis, and development of technical reports focusing on the development of a small scale catch and release fishery at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. This project will inform management of recreational, coastal fisheries at Palmyra Atoll, including best practices for ensuring fish survival, fish movement and habitat use, bycatch rates, growth rates, catch per unit effort, and impact of fishing activity on the atoll ecosystem. The field work includes research on a mark-recapture study on several fish species at Palmyra Atoll and drone-based observations of shark behavior associated with fishing activity. Data will be analyzed and presented to managers in the form of technical reports, including figures, maps and images associated with the work. The results from this study will also be submitted to a peer-reviewed scientific journal for publication.
