The ultimate goal of this project is to create a tool that provides actionable restoration guidance to increase the success of coral restoration projects towards stated objectives. The first phase of this effort is the conceptual development of a simulation modeling framework that extends principles from fisheries management strategy evaluation to coral reef restoration (hereafter Restoration Strategy Evaluation [RSE]). In particular, the RSE will link biological processes to restoration logistics, spanning from coral gardening to outplanting, under different ecological and environmental scenarios to identify optimal strategies given a stated objective. Ultimately, the RSE tool will allow the exploration and evaluation of various 'what-if' scenarios to aids in planning and adaptive management amidst future uncertainties. Once operationalized, we will answer questions such as ‘how can we refine coral farming and outplanting strategies to enhance restoration success while minimizing costs?’ and ‘how might various future climate scenarios affect the success of different restoration strategies?’, allowing both researchers and practitioners to navigate coral restoration's complexities and variabilities with strategic foresight.
