Abstract

The Nature Conservancy of California has an Ocean Recovery strategy with a focus on improving information on kelp status through mapping and monitoring, advancing science-based kelp management and restoration, and implementing projects focused on resetting kelp ecosystems and advancing kelp restoration. Dr. Jenn Caselle, as a leading kelp forest ecologist, is a key partner for advancing the science and information needed to inform kelp management and kelp ecosystem restoration in California and beyond.

Dr. Caselle will provide scientific expertise and key products to advance kelp management and restoration by providing kelp ecological expertise and scientific input to the Conservancy’s Kelp Conservation Sub-
Strategy. She will act as a liaison among various partners (e.g. scientific community, Ocean Protection Council, California Department of Fish and Wildlife) to help ensure that the broader set of science and implementation activities are informed by science. She will help Conservancy staff
be aware of and understand the kelp science efforts of various entities in California. Dr. Caselle will also provide scientific review and input on Conservancy and partners scientific efforts focused on kelp monitoring and mapping, urchin removals and urchin markets, restoration of kelp or kelp ecosystem components (e.g. Pycnopodia sea stars), kelp population structure and kelp persistence, and other kelp ecosystem topics.
