Congratulations to Dr. Kathryn (Kat) Beheshti, 2025 Cronin Award Recipient.
The Marine Science Institute (MSI) at UC Santa Barbara is proud to congratulate Dr. Kathryn (Kat) Beheshti on being named the recipient of the 2025 Cronin Award for Early Achievement, presented by the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF). This prestigious award recognizes exceptional early-career scientists who are making significant contributions to the understanding and stewardship of estuarine and coastal ecosystems.
Dr. Beheshti is a coastal ecologist whose work exemplifies the integration of rigorous science with real-world environmental problem-solving. A central part of her role at MSI is serving as Principal Investigator for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Mitigation Monitoring Program (SONGS MMP)—one of the largest coastal mitigation programs on the West Coast. In this role, she oversees multiple large-scale coastal restoration and monitoring efforts and leads a team of eight full-time staff. Her leadership has been instrumental in advancing ecosystem resilience and recovery along the Southern California coast.
Since completing her Ph.D. at UC Santa Cruz in 2021, Dr. Beheshti has made significant strides in marine and estuarine science. Her research focuses on the recovery dynamics of foundational coastal species—such as salt marsh plants, seagrasses, and kelps—and how long-term monitoring and field experiments can guide effective restoration strategies. Her work has broad implications, contributing not only to scientific knowledge but also to coastal policy, climate adaptation, and resource management.
Dr. Beheshti is also a dedicated science communicator and collaborator, known for making complex ecological concepts accessible to diverse audiences. Whether through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, public talks, or media outreach, she consistently bridges the gap between science and society.
MSI is proud to have Dr. Beheshti among its researchers and celebrates this well-deserved recognition of her leadership, innovation, and impact.
Congratulations, Kat!
