To evaluate the efficiency of carbon sequestration for agricultural biomass in anoxic marine basins. PI Raven's research team will evaluate rates of microbial breakdown of biomass materials and their specific organic components during exposure to natural communities of anaerobic microorganisms under conditions analogous to the Orca and Cariaco Basins and the Black Sea. As part of these experiments, the team will also evaluate potential environmental and ecological impacts associated with agricultural biomass storage in anoxic regions of the seafloor.
