The Nature of Student Activities associated with this award contain basic understanding of programming and motivation to learn more about spatial statistics is required from the selected student. Additional programming skills will be obtained during the course of this project with the guidance of a mentor. Additional research skills to be gained by the student include critical thinking, data quality control and evaluation, time management and science communication. The student will engage in monthly meetings with the group of PIs in the project to have the opportunity to engage in collaborative research meetings. The student will participate at the weekly group meetings of the Caselle research group and present the outputs of the research, promoting science communication skills and engaging in group discussions to obtain feedback. In addition, the students will have the exciting opportunity to join other UCSB students in all of the career development and training activities of ongoing programs such as the DIVErsity in Diving program. The student will also have the opportunity to present the findings of the project at the annual Western Society of Naturalists (WSN) or Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference in a poster or oral presentation format.
